SAT Prep:
The Stylus approach to SAT preparation involves deconstructing the exam into logical, manageable parts. Our specialists will demystify each section of the test by exposing the recurring formula test-makers use to create their questions. We do not rely on a generic short-cut strategy – an ineffective and inexact science. Instead, our tutors create an individualized plan that utilizes each student’s strengths while confronting his or her limitations. By working through each element of the test in a precise manner, our students approach the examination with a sense of control and confidence on test day.
Craft of the Essay:
In response to a decline in writing skills within the student population, many colleges have begun to emphasize the written portions of their applications. Increasingly, the quality of personal statements, short answer responses, and sample analytical essays determines the success of the applicant. In addition, the SAT now requires students to write a complete essay within twenty-five minutes, a daunting task for many. At Stylus, we consider writing a skill that requires not only grammatical accuracy, but a command of logic, organization, pace, and tone. We train our students to think comprehensively. By completing written assignments and analyzing supplementary texts, our students learn the essential elements of essay writing – brainstorming ideas, developing an outline and thesis, and infusing written work with a distinctive voice. Through practice, our students develop a talent for writing an essay in which every word feels inevitable.
College Admissions:
Completely eliminate the anxiety of college admissions by hiring a private counselor to guide you through each step of the admissions process. Stylus advisors will answer your questions about selecting colleges, preparing applications, and, most importantly, writing the personal statement, the one area of the application where you are free to truly distinguish yourself from your peers. From brainstorming to editing, we will assist you in every facet of the essay-writing process. We don’t force you to adhere to a pre-designed template, and we won’t push you into writing about topics only because they have worked in the past. With our guidance, you will create an essay that utilizes your strengths and conveys your interests, transforming your application from a dry list of grades and activities into a detailed portrait of a compelling, well-rounded individual.
Academic Tutoring:
Stylus offers academic tutoring in a range of middle and high school subjects, including Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, U.S. History and European History. We confront the underlying cause of each student’s difficulty, whether it be organization, study habits, test-taking skills, or subject comprehension. Each student is matched with an experienced specialist who will create a completely customized program to improve academic performance and achieve scholastic success.
SAT Subject Tests:
Now more than ever, top-ranking schools require at least two SAT subject tests as part of their application. Subject tests demand focused study, but they don’t have to be intimidating. They provide a great opportunity for a student to prove that he or she is a well-rounded scholar. Even a so-called English prodigy or math whiz must show their versatility in the college admissions process. Subject tests are also an excellent way to gain college credit, enabling a student to pursue more specific areas of study in college.
Stylus specializes in the following subject tests: Literature, Math 1 and 2 C, World History, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.
Grammar Basics:
What’s the difference between past participle and past perfect? How can a prepositional phrase be the key to sentence correction on the SAT? And WHAT is a gerund?
Grammar can seem like a foreign language, but it doesn’t have to be so unfamiliar. A strong grasp of the rules is essential to both the writing section of the SAT as well as the college admissions process, and class work may not adequately prepare a student to tackle both of these challenges. Stylus understands that without a basic knowledge of grammar principles, a student will fall behind in college-level work.
By beginning with the basics, we lay a strong foundation for success on the SAT while preparing in advance for the writing demands of college coursework. We make grammar clear, accessible, and even enjoyable.
